Commercial RO Pretreatment Filters

Commercial RO pretreatment commonly uses filtration stages selected around the source water, the membrane and system requirements, and the specific contaminants or conditions being managed. Depending on the system, that can involve sediment or particulate filtration, carbon or other media treatment, and other application-specific conditioning before water reaches the RO membrane — but the exact sequence is not universal. It's governed by the manufacturer or system requirements and the actual source-water conditions, not a fixed formula.

Common Pretreatment Considerations

These come up across most commercial RO pretreatment applications, though how each one applies still depends on the specific system.

  • Particulate / sediment loading in the source water
  • Chlorine or other oxidant exposure, where relevant to the membrane
  • Membrane protection requirements set by the system manufacturer
  • Source-water conditions specific to the site
  • Pressure and flow through the pretreatment stage
  • Pretreatment cartridge sizing and format

Application-Dependent Treatment

Depending on the source water and system design, a pretreatment train may also need one or more of the following. Not every system needs all of them, and none of them should be assumed without knowing the actual water and system:

  • Carbon or other media treatment
  • Scale-control approaches
  • Softening
  • Additional particulate stages
  • Other system-specific conditioning

System-Specific Requirements

Final pretreatment selection should consider the specifics of the actual system, not a general rule:

  • RO system / manufacturer requirements
  • Membrane requirements
  • Source-water analysis, where relevant
  • Flow and pressure
  • Temperature
  • Cartridge and housing dimensions
  • Treatment objective
  • Replacement / service requirements
  • Applicable certifications or specifications, where required

Chlorine, Chloramine, and Carbon

Carbon and other media are commonly used to manage disinfectant exposure ahead of an RO membrane, but what treatment is actually required depends on which disinfectant is present, its concentration and contact conditions, the specific media selected, the flow rate and contact time through the stage, the overall system design, and the membrane manufacturer's own requirements. This page doesn't make a general claim that any particular media removes a particular disinfectant at a given rate — that's a system-specific engineering question, not a one-line answer, and it's confirmed against the actual system rather than assumed here.

Post-treatment or polishing downstream of the membrane — including deionization — is relevant in some systems, but it's a separate topic from pretreatment and isn't the focus of this guide.

About the RO Membrane Itself

Pretreatment exists to protect and support the RO membrane, so understanding the membrane and its manufacturer's requirements is part of getting pretreatment right. FilterBridge Supply supplies RO membranes, high-flow cartridges, and string-wound and melt-blown cartridges for water and wastewater treatment. Send the part number and we'll tell you what we can supply against it.

What to Have Ready for a Commercial RO Pretreatment Quote

If you already know your cartridge part numbers, you can start there — the system context below is helpful but not required.

Core — start here

  • Manufacturer
  • Cartridge / part number
  • Quantity needed
  • Ship-to ZIP

Helpful — system context

  • RO system or manufacturer
  • Pretreatment stage or location in the train
  • Cartridge dimensions / format
  • Source-water information, if known
  • Treatment objective
  • Reorder frequency
  • Any relevant system requirements

Substituting a cartridge in an existing pretreatment train? Same dimensions alone don't make a real substitute — learn how to cross-reference a part number first.
